Research your career field

Posted on 01 May 2011 by admin

As the year starts, you may be thinking about subjects to choose at school to support your career path and thinking about which career to follow once you finish school. BUT, you still think you need more information to ensure that you have made the right choice. What do you do?

Research is the answer.

What exactly is research? Research means finding out more about a subject you are interested in. It includes:

  • reading books,
  • magazine articles,
  • watching others,
  • internet searches
  • talking to people who have experience in the subject you want to know more about.

Don’t just choose a career because of the money or because that’s what your friends are choosing. There are other things to be considered when making a career. The potential growth in that industry, the personality traits required, knowledge of what the career entails, etc.

Ask family or neighbours that are in the field you want to pursue for more information, read books and articles on the career you are interested in, such as the career profiles on this website AND if you can, try to get an internship during school holidays, even if it’s just one day of ‘shadowing’ someone who already does the work you want to do. You will not be sorry that you spent the time getting the "ins-and-outs" of your dream career.

So we encourage you to go out there and do your RESEARCH!!!
